Floral Design Intensive
We're planning something different for September 2025. This isn't your typical certification course—it's a hands-on program where you'll actually work with flowers, not just watch demonstrations.
Duration
12 Weeks
Start Date
September 2025
Format
In-Person Studio
What You'll Actually Learn
Most courses give you theory and send you home. We're doing the opposite—practical work first, concepts as they become relevant. You'll leave with a portfolio of actual arrangements you've created, not just notes about color theory.
Foundation Techniques
Starting with the basics everyone needs but few courses teach properly. How to condition stems so arrangements actually last, proper cutting techniques that don't damage flowers, and the mechanics behind making things stay where you put them.
- Stem preparation and hydration methods
- Tool selection and maintenance
- Structural mechanics for different vessel types
- Seasonal flower selection strategies
Composition Development
Here's where it gets interesting. You'll work on creating arrangements that look intentional rather than thrown together. We cover proportion, balance, and texture—but through making dozens of actual bouquets, not sitting through lectures.
- Visual weight and balance principles
- Color interaction in natural materials
- Focal point creation and emphasis
- Working with mixed textures and forms
Client-Focused Design
The reality of floral work is that you're often creating for someone else's vision, not your own. We'll practice translating vague requests into actual designs, working within budget constraints, and adapting when your preferred flowers aren't available.
- Consultation and interpretation skills
- Budget-conscious substitution strategies
- Working with seasonal availability
- Event-specific design considerations
Portfolio Production
The final weeks are about documenting your work properly. You'll create a collection of arrangements specifically designed to show your range, and learn how to photograph them in a way that actually represents the quality of your work.
- Portfolio piece planning and execution
- Natural light photography basics
- Presentation and documentation methods
- Building a professional showcase
Your Instructor
Graysen Whitlock
Lead Floral Designer
I've been working with flowers in Baku since 2012. Started in a small shop on Nizami Street, spent years doing everything from wedding installations to hotel lobby displays. What I've learned is that technique matters more than natural talent—good design comes from understanding how materials behave and having enough experience to anticipate problems before they happen.
This program reflects what I wish someone had taught me when I was starting. We're skipping the parts that look impressive in course catalogs but don't help much in actual work. Instead, you'll get the practical knowledge that took me years to figure out on my own.
Background & Experience
- 13 years professional floral design practice
- Specialized in custom event installations
- Trained under European design methods
- Regular contributor to local design workshops
Program Details & Application
Studio Location
Classes meet at our working studio on Ahmad Rajabli Street in Baku. It's a real workspace, not a classroom—you'll be surrounded by the same tools and materials used for actual client projects. Parking available nearby, accessible by public transport.
Class Structure
Limited to 8 participants maximum. Sessions run Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 6-9 PM, with occasional Saturday workshops. Small groups mean you get direct feedback on your work and plenty of hands-on time with materials.
Application Timeline
Initial Inquiry
Send us an email explaining your interest and current experience level. We're looking for people who are serious about learning, not necessarily those who already know everything.
Studio Visit
Schedule a brief meeting at the studio to see the space and discuss program expectations. This helps both of us determine if it's the right fit. Visits available throughout July 2025.
Enrollment
If we both agree it makes sense, you'll complete enrollment by mid-August 2025. We'll provide a materials list and preparation guidelines for the first session.
